Privacy Policy

BookNest is a family reading app that keeps your family's books, reading history, and reading goals on your devices. This policy explains what data BookNest stores, where it lives, and the controls you have over it.

1. Data Stored on This Device (Local-First)

BookNest stores the following data locally on your device:

• Your library: book titles, authors, ISBNs, reading progress, and saved quotes
• Family members: names, ages, roles, and avatar colors
• Reading sessions and streaks
• Your preferences (reading theme, font size, text-to-speech voice and pitch)

If you choose to download the optional AI Pack or Voice Pack, the model files are stored on your device. All AI answers and text-to-speech are generated entirely on-device — your text is never sent to a server for AI processing.

2. Family Cloud Sync (Optional)

Family Cloud is off by default. If you enable it, your library, members, reading history, and goals are mirrored to BookNest's own cloud database (hosted on Cloudflare) so other devices in your family can stay in sync. Only devices that join your family with your 6-letter invite code can access this data. This data is stored on our servers for as long as your family cloud exists.

3. Sign in with Apple

BookNest does not use accounts or passwords. Sign in with Apple is optional and used only as a recovery anchor: if you lose your device, signing in with the same Apple ID lets you recover your family's cloud data. We store Apple's user identifier for this purpose. We do not use Sign in with Apple for tracking or advertising.

4. What We Do NOT Do

• No advertising and no third-party ad SDKs
• No analytics — we do not collect usage analytics
• No cross-app or cross-website tracking (no ATT prompt is shown)
• No sale or sharing of your data with third parties
• No AI training on your content — your books and text never leave your device except for the optional family cloud mirror described above

5. Children

BookNest is designed for family reading, including a Kids Mode for young readers. All data — including Kids Mode data — is stored under the same local-first and family-cloud rules described above. If you have questions about children's privacy, contact us at the address below.

6. Your Controls

• Export your data at any time: Settings → Privacy & Data → Export Backup (saves a JSON copy to Files or iCloud Drive)
• Leave the family cloud on this device without deleting cloud data: Settings → Family Cloud → Remove
• Delete everything permanently: Settings → Delete Account removes your family's cloud data (when you have permission as family creator or Apple-linked owner) and all data on this device, then returns to onboarding. This cannot be undone.

7. Data Retention and Deletion

• Local data is deleted when you use Sign Out or Delete Account.
• Cloud data is deleted when the family creator or an Apple-linked owner uses Delete Account, or on request (see contact below).
• Backups you export yourself are stored wherever you choose to save them.

8. Changes to This Policy

If we change how we handle data, we will update this page and revise the "Last updated" date above.
